If I had to choose one major flaw of Planet Coaster, it's definitely the path building system. PC has the most advanced path building system of any major theme park sim game on the market, but why does it still feel so clunky and limited?
The first reason is the snap system. Every time I go to place a path that's even in the same vicinity of another pre-existing path, I'm forced to delete parts of the other paths so that the one I'm building doesn't try to snap onto my other paths. It doesn't even matter if I close out the path builder entirely and reopen it, the paths still try to snap together. Don't get me wrong, the snap system definitely has an important role in the game, but it definitely needs improvements; perhaps a box that toggles the snap system on and off.
Reason number two has to do with the queue paths. While not a major issue, it's still one that could use some attention. Just because I'm laying a queue does not mean it has to be a different style path designed specifically for queues. A ticket vendor at the end of the path should be enough to designate a path as a queue. When I go to Disneyland, they don't have some ridiculously colored path that lets me know it's a queue. I know it's a queue because there's a sign that says the name of the ride, perhaps with the word 'Entrance' next to it. Please remove this limitation, it's something that goes back even to Rollercoaster Tycoon 1, and I never understood the reasoning behind it.
The third reason is that the paths are forced to be so linear. I have never been to a theme park where every path goes in one line, whether it be straight or curved. The paths are limited only by walls and fences. There is currently no way to design a wide open path area that has edges that aren't square. Paths in PC should be laid essentially by zoning off awkward-shaped areas where guests can walk, and coloring in that area with the style of path we want it to look like. The free-form selection tool from Microsoft Paint comes to mind as a way of describing how this could be done.
Number four is a short one: hold shift to raise and lower a path just like scenery pieces, seriously, why wasn't this in the game on release?
Planet Coaster is a brilliant game that improved massively on the third Rollercoaster Tycoon game, but I feel as though the path building system is lacking so much. It could be so great but it's just not anywhere near where it possibly could be.
